** Hunter Goodwin Signs Offer Sheet
According to a news report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune
this morning, Vikings tight end Hunter Goodwin has signed an offer
sheet from the Miami Dolphins for a 3 year deal worth approximately
$2.5 Million, of which he'll get $750,000 in a signing bonus.
Goodwin is a restricted free agent of the Vikings who has
played 3 years in the NFL. At 6-5 and 271 pounds (196 cm and 123
kilos), Goodwin is more of an extra offensive lineman and less of a
pass catcher than other tight ends around the league. He has played
in 40 games in his career, starting 11 but caught just 11 passes for
101 yards.
The Vikings have 7 days from yesterday to match the offer. If
they do not match the Dolphins' offer, they will get the Dolphins' 4th
round draft pick in the year 2000 draft as compensation.
** Other News And Rumors
Leslie Shepherd has agreed to a 1 year deal with the new
Cleveland Browns. I've heard that the deal is around $1.5 million.
Shawn Dawkins was reportedly ready to sign a deal with the
Seattle Seahawks earlier in the week, but still has not officially
signed. The latest word seems to be that he is not happy with the
Seahawks' offer.
My Comments:
If the Dolphins do get Goodwin (and the odds look good), I
think we are once again seeing the influence of Dave Wannestedt in the
organization. We know that JJ wants to improve the running game, but
Goodwin is not a player that JJ would be familiar with.
On the other hand, when Dave Wannestedt was with the Bears, he
would have seen Goodwin twice a year when the Bears played the Vikes.
It seems a bit of a reach to pay a non-catching tight end that
much money, but such is the nature of modern football. If you're
good, you get a *lot* of money. If you're great, you get an obscene
amount of money.
