Nov 16, 1998: -- Charles Jordan In Trouble --
Dolphins wide receiver Charles Jordan was arrested Saturday
morning outside of a nightclub in Ft. Lauderdale for getting drunk and
disorderly and then fighting with the police when they tried to arrest
him. Following the altercation, Jimmy Johnson announced that Jordan's
tenure with the team is over. "We'll let the judicial system run its
course, but he has no future with this team.", JJ said.
Following the arrest on Saturday, news reports stated that the
Dolphins have cut Jordan from the team by waiving him injured. These
reports have not been verified on the Dolphins' official website, nor
on the official NFL website, but it seems likely that they are true,
given JJ's comments after the incident and the seriousness of the
allegations against Jordan.
According to reports, Jordan got involved in an altercation
between two other customers and was asked to leave the bar. Jordan
refused, supposedly saying "I guess you'll have to arrest me.". The
police then attempted to take him into custody, but Jordan fought off
3 police officers and had to be maced before they were able to subdue
him.
Jordan was later released on a $1,625 bond after being charged
with trespassing, battery on a law enforcement officer and two counts
of resisting arrest, one of which is "resisting arrest with violence".
The last two counts - Battery of a law enforcement officer and
resisting arrest with violence - are felonies.
My Comments:
One of the surest ways to screw up your life is to be arrogant
and stupid with the police. One of the surest ways to get arrogant
and stupid is to have a lot to drink. It appears that Jordan has now
mastered this process.
For the team, this is a damn shame, because it appeared before
the season that Jordan just might make this his breakout year after
showing flashes of potential for the past 2 years. He was handed the
starting job and only had to play up to his potential to keep it - but
he never did. His lack of production, combined with his injury, then
left him on the injured reserve list.
It won't affect the team this year, of course, because Jordan
wasn't going to play anymore anyway and it probably won't be much of a
distraction for the players focused on playing the game.
For Jordan, this is probably the end of an NFL career that
could have been much different if only he'd gotten his act together.
He had the speed and the talent to be a much better player, but his
attitude sank him in the end.
In contrast, you have Lamar Thomas, who doesn't have anywhere
near the talent of Jordan, but seems to have turned his life around
after big problems with his girlfriend and the police. If we could
put Jordan's talent into Lamar Thomas, we would have one hell of a
player.
But we can't and now Jordan has lost his job and will probably
face jail time - the judicial system is not sympathetic to people who
think that it's okay to fight with the police.
