Aug 27, 1998: -- Three Players Picked Up --
The Dolphins claimed 3 players off the waiver wire yesterday,
following Tuesday's roster cuts around the league. Wide receivers
Nate Jacquet and Phil Savoy and tight end Hendrick Lusk were picked up
by the Dolphins following their release from their respective teams.
Nate Jacquet (6'0", 173 lbs) was originally signed by the
Colts last year after being picked in the 5th round of the draft. He
was on the practice squad at the beginning of the season, but was
signed to the regular squad about halfway through the season. He
also played on special teams, returning kickoffs and punts and making
7 tackles for the year on the coverage teams.
Phil Savoy (6'2", 195 lbs) was drafted by the Cardinals in the
7th round this spring from Colorado, where he started for 3 years.
While at Colorado, he caught 152 passes for 2,176 yards and 14
touchdowns.
Hendrick Lusk (6'2", 245 lbs) was originally drafted by the
Saints in the 7th round of the 1996 draft. He made the regular roster
of the Saints that year, starting 3 games at tight end for them and
playing in all 16. He had 27 receptions for 210 yards in 1996.
Last year, Mike Ditka released him in June and he was claimed
by the Jets off waivers. The Jets then traded him to Green Bay, where
he spent the rest of the 1997 training camp before the Packers waived
him at the end of the summer. He didn't play in 1997, but the
Redskins signed him in December and he spent this summer in their
training camp.
My Comments:
Of all these players, Jacquet has the best chance of making
the team, because of his special teams experience. Any backups the
Dolphins sign almost have to be able to play special teams.
Phil Savoy looks the most imposing physically, and has been
clocked as fast as 4.4 in the 40. However, according to his draft
profile on ESPNet, he is a very erratic player and that's the last
thing that the Dolphins need.
Why the Dolphins would pick up Lusk is a mystery to me. I had
thought that they were pretty happy with Chris Fontenot, but perhaps
his initial performance has tailed off.
But what a career Lusk has had so far. Last year, he went
through 3 teams in as many weeks. Unfortunately for him, however,
Miami will probably be his last pro team.
