Aug 20, 1998: -- Y.Green Seriously Injures Knee --
The news wires are reporting this afternoon that wide receiver
Yatil Green has once again torn the ACL in his right knee and will
miss the entire 1998 season. According to various accounts, Yatil was
running a non-contact passing drill in practice on Wednesday when he
ruptured the ligament graft in his right knee that had been surgically
attached last year.
Yatil will have the knee operated on again and will probably
miss the entire 1998 season. He was expected to be an important part
of the passing game this year.
With Yatil Green out for the year, the Dolphins may look
around to see if they can find another deep threat that they can
acquire in a trade or through free agency. And they undoubtedly will
look closely at the players currently on the roster to see if anyone
there can step in and fill Green's shoes.
My Comments:
And things were going so well...
While it's difficult to get an exact answer on the causes and
possible cures for these kinds of injuries, it appears that the
stress that the bigger receivers are putting on their knees in
practice is really taking a toll.
I looked closely at the field when I was down in Miami and I
didn't see anything that would make me think that there is something
wrong with the turf down there. Of course, the dirt in South Florida
is not nice, soft, forgiving loam in most places. Usually it's sand
or rock, so maybe that has an effect.
Or maybe they should try shorter cleats for the receivers in
practice. That way, they wouldn't put as much stress on their knees
when they run.
Because I'm an optimist when it comes to the team, I was
willing to let things go with Yatil Green and say that he wasn't
injury prone and that he would heal properly and would make a
contribution this year. But now it appears that his knee may never
be strong enough to really be able to withstand the punishment of
playing football again.
Repairs on anything - body parts, bridges, computers - are
almost never as good as the original. If this repair didn't hold up,
then it's unlikely that any future repair will be able to hold up
under the stress of playing in the NFL.
I'm afraid we're probably going to have to live with the fact
that Yatil Green will never be a force for the Dolphins. I hope I'm
wrong - but I doubt it.
Oh, and one more thing....
AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
