** Stan White Waived
The Dolphins announced today that they have waived quarterback
Stan White. White was originally signed in March as a backup
quarterback to compete for the third QB spot on the roster. White
played his college football at Auburn and had spent the last 4 years
with the New York Giants until he was waived this spring.
** Derrick Steagall Undergoes Surgery
Rookie free agent Derrick Steagall underwent surgery today to
repair serious ligament damage to his left knee that occurred on
the last day of QB Camp earlier this month. At this time, it looks
like Steagall will be out for the remainder of the year.
Steagall was signed as a free agent immediately after the
draft in April. He played his college football at Georgia Tech where
he was an exceptionally gifted athlete before he injured his right
knee by tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in 1996. He had barely
recovered from that injury enough in 1997 to cause the Dolphins to
notice him enough to sign him.
My Comments:
Stan White never really had much of a chance to make the team,
especially after the Dolphins signed John Dutton and Damon Huard had a
good showing in NFL Europe. He was released by the Giants this year
and the Giants are not exactly overflowing with quarterback talent.
Derrick Steagall seems to be the original hard-luck kid. In
high school, he once ran a 10.46 in the 100 yard dash and played
quarterback for his team. He was quite a player his first few years
in college, but the knee injury in 1996 knocked him out of the most
important years of his college career.
In 1997, it took him most of the season to get back to the
form he had before the injury. He finished the season strong,
however, and the Dolphins thought he might make the team this year.
Now, however, he's injured the other knee and that will almost
certainly spell the end of his season with the Dolphins and perhaps
his career as well.
