Apr 17, 1998: -- Dolphins Lose McGlockton --
For the third time this year, the Dolphins have come up short
in their attempt to add a dominant defensive lineman to the
organization, when they failed to sign Chester McGlockton to a deal
before the midnight deadline.
Details are still sketchy at this point, but it appears that
the Kansas City Chiefs outbit the Dolphins for the services of
McGlockton at the last minute. Reports in the Herald and Sun-Sentinel
both indicate that the Dolphins' staff worked on proposals to
McGlockton all the way up until midnight, but refused to break the $6
million per year barrier.
Initial reports have the Chiefs securing McGlockton at a cost
of approximately $30.75 million for 5 years, or just over an average
of $6 million per year. The Chiefs kill two birds with one stone on
this deal, depriving one of their division rivals of a good player and
gaining a starting defensive tackle themselves.
The Dolphins had worked on this deal since Tuesday when
the Raiders refused to guarantee McGlockton's contract and seemed to
be the front runner through most of the bidding, but refused to match
Kansas City's final offer.
My Comments:
This loss is another disappointment. Not only does it deprive
the Dolphins of the opportunity to get some real help on the defensive
line, but it also deprives them of some potential trade bait.
It's hard to know how this will work, of course. It may be all
for the best, since McGlockton's attitude and work ethic have been
questioned - with good reason.
However, it's hard to dispute the fact that McGlockton is an
enormously talented player who would have upgraded the Dolphins'
defensive line had they gotten hold of him.
About the only positive thing about this failure is that it
leaves the Dolphins with an extra second round draft choice.
