Mar 06, 1998: -- Erickson Re-Signs --

The Dolphins have re-signed quarterback Craig Erickson to a 2 year deal worth a reported $2.3 million including a $1 million signing bonus. Erickson has been Marino's backup for the past 2 years and will remain his backup for the immediate future.

Erickson's contract has an incentive clause that will increase his salary substantially if he is promoted to the starting quarterback position. According to the Dolphins' Bob Ackles, if Erickson was to start for the Dolphins, his salary would be increased to "be in line with what starting quarterbacks make".

Erickson was being courted by 4 other teams, but apparently only considered Miami. He didn't even visit any of the other teams that were pursuing him.

My Comments:

I know that Erickson hasn't always gotten the best comments from fans and critics around south Florida, but I think that he's a competent backup and it's good to see him stay in Miami.

And you have to like his team spirit and his attitude.

Of course, this doesn't preclude the Dolphins from picking up a quarterback in the draft and I expect that the Dolphins will draft a quarterback at some point in the draft this year.
