Oct 21, 1997: -- Mike Chalenski Signed --
ESPN is reporting this afternoon that the Dolphins have signed
defensive lineman Mike Chalenski to a contract for undisclosed terms.
This rounds out their roster at 53 players and fills a hole left by
the injury to Jason Taylor last week.
Chalenski originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free
agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1993 and played in 15 games for
them that year. He was seriously injured in 1994 and didn't play at
all, but did play in 9 games for the Eagles in 1995. He was granted
free agency after the 1995 season and signed with the Jets for 1996.
Last year, he played in 15 games for the Jets and had 7
starts, getting a total of 41 tackles, half a sack and a fumble
recovery for the year. He became a free agent again this spring and
apparently spent the summer in the Vikings training camp, but was
waived by the end of the summer.
Chalenski, at 6'5" and 260 pounds will probably be used mainly
at defensive end, in the rotation with the other defensive linemen.
The Dolphins undoubtedly signed Chalenski to a minimum salary
contract.
Chalenski played in college at UCLA, where he had 105 tackles
and 6 sacks in 3 seasons. Coincidentally, his first NFL start came
last year against the Dolphins when he played for the Jets.
My Comments:
I wouldn't expect much from Chalenski, but he may be able to
fill in as an adequate replacement in the defensive line rotation.
Hopefully, he can add just enough for the Dolphins to get back some of
their pass rush.
