Oct 16, 1997: -- Derrick Rodgers AFC Defensive Player of the Week --
The NFL announced yesterday that Dolphins rookie Derrick
Rodgers has been selected as their defensive player of the week.
Rodgers was selected for this honor following his performance in the
game against the Jets on Sunday, in which he collected 8 tackles, 2
sacks and forced a fumble at a crucial point in the game.
Rodgers was selected by the Dolphins in the 3rd round of this
year's draft. He is an unusual rookie, in that he only played one
year of organized college football and is 26 years old. He entered
college after spending 4 years in the Air Force. Right now, Rodgers
is tied for the lead in sacks for AFC rookies with Peter Boulware of
Baltimore. Both players have 4 sacks.
Also in the news, the Dolphins have announced that center Tim
Ruddy will probably start Sunday against the Ravens, even though he's
listed as questionable on the injury report. He was unable to play
this past Sunday against the Jets after bruising his knee against the
Chiefs.
And last, but not least, JJ has stated publicly that Brian
Manning is ahead of Qadry Ismail on the depth chart after the release
of Fred Barnett. Manning will be the designated 4th wide receiver for
the Dolphins offense as the go into Baltimore on Sunday.
My Comments:
It's nice to see Derrick Rodgers get credit for his play on
Sunday against the Jets. Dan Marino was also in the running for
player of the week honors, but the NFL doesn't give it to two guys
from the same team, and Marino had already had quite a few of these
honors. I'm sure Dan's just as happy about the victory, even without
the player of the week honors.
