Oct 11, 1997: -- Perriman Has Surgery --
The Miami Herald reported this morning that wide receiver
Brett Perriman had surgery on his knee to fix "loose bodies" that had
been causing swelling and irritation. The surgery, which took 20
minutes, was described as minor and will only keep Perriman sidelined
2-3 weeks.
As a result of the successful surgery, the Dolphins will keep
Perriman on the roster. There was some question about whether or not
the Dolphins would honor his contract since he flunked the initial
physical, but JJ said this morning that the Dolphins will keep him
after renegotiating his contract.
The original contract would have paid him about $425,000 for
the rest of the season, but the renegotiated deal will have the
Dolphins paying him at the rate of $275,000 per year for any week that
he is inactive. In other words, Perriman will get the minimum league
salary for veterans of his experience if he doesn't dress for a game.
In other news, Tim Ruddy's condition has improved enough that
he was able to practice Firday and should be able to play against the
Jets this Sunday. If he doesn't play, John Bock will take his place.
Ruddy strained a knee ligament against the Chiefs last
Saturday and missed Wednesday and Thursday practices, but was able to
practice on Firday.
My Comments:
This seems to me to be a better deal than the Dolphins
originally had for Perriman. If he doesn't play, he'll get the
minimum, which reduces his impact on the team.
It still remains to be seen if he can have an impact on the
team in the last half of the season, but at least the Dolphins won't
be overpaying for him if he doesn't play well.
The news about Tim Ruddy is unsettling. Ruddy is instrumental
to the offensive line. He calls the offensive line blocking schemes
and his effectiveness is demonstrated by the fact that the Dolphins
are the best team in the league at protecting the quarterback. If
Ruddy wasn't calling the right signals, the Dolphins wouldn't lead the
league in sacks allowed.
However, he's a tough enough guy and this game is important
enough that he'll play if there's any way he can.
