Aug 24, 1997: -- Dawsey is the final Cut --
According to the Sun-Sentinel this morning, WR Lawrence Dawsey
is the final player that the Dolphins cut to bring the roster number
down to 53. Dawsey was signed this spring to help bolster a weak
receiving corps, but has not been particularly exciting in camp and
rather than keep him and cut some other players at positions of
greater need, the Dolphins have let him go.
This cut leaves the Dolphins with 2 quarterbacks, 4 running
backs, 2 fullbacks, 3 tight ends, 5 wide receivers, 10 offensive
linemen, 4 defensive tackles, 4 defensive ends, 7 linebackers, 5
cornerbacks, 5 safeties, 1 punter and 1 kicker.
In related news, it appears that safety Corey Harris is being
considered for duties as a kickoff returner. Even though he only had
one return on Thursday for 23 yards, special teams coach Mike Westhoff
is very positive about him. Harris will compete with Irving Spikes
and Jerris McPhail, who were the principal kickoff returners last
year.
And last, but not least, wide receiver Brian Manning has
received permission to change his number to number 83. His training
camp number was 18, but receiver during the regular season normally
wear numbers in the 80s.
My Comments:
Another surprise - as soon as I get finished telling you about
all the players that JJ might cut, he cuts someone else. Well, you've
got to admit - Dolphins' football is a lot more exciting under JJ, at
least as far as roster moves are concerned.
The reason this is such a surprise is that it leaves the
Dolphins with only 5 wide receivers on the roster. Of course, Troy
Drayton will line up in the slot sometimes and Jerris McPhail will
line up split wide at other times, but this still leaves the Dolphins
a little thin.
We saw this summer how quickly 2 players at the same position
can go down and leaving the wide receiver position this thin seems
dangerous. Still, JJ has never been one to avoid taking chances.
