Aug 01, 1997: -- Clayton Holmes may have failed Drug Test --
According to a report in this morning's Miami Herald, free
agent Clayton Holmes may have failed a drug test for cocaine this
summer, sometime between the quarterback camp and the first week of
training camp.
Reporter Armando Salguero is reporting today that two unnamed
sources have informed him that Holmes failed the drug test back in
June, but is appealing to the NFL. According to Salguero a routine
urinalysis turned up traces of cocaine in Holmes.
Following his previous suspension for drugs, Holmes has been
required to undergo drug testing as much as ten times per month for
alcohol, cocaine and marijuana. If his appeal is denied by
commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Holmes will be suspended from the league
for a year.
Holmes immediately appealed the positive test, in accordance
with league rules that require an appeal within 5 days of the test.
My Comments:
If, in fact, Holmes has tested positive for cocaine and
doesn't have an explanation that makes sense, then his tenure with the
Dolphins and with the league is over.
I mean, you have to be a special kind of stupid to take drugs
when you are being tested every 3 days. Either that or you have to be
seriously addicted to the stuff. Either way, you don't belong on a
professional football team.
And I can't imagine what "reasonable" explanation Holmes could
have to explain away a positive test. I mean, can you imagine him
saying to the commissioner "Hey, Paul - I just tripped and fell into a
pile of cocaine that someone left on the street. I didn't mean it!".
Or how about this one - "Hey, Paul - I was just driving down
Biscayne Boulevard in my convertible and this bag of coke fell from
the sky and landed on my head! Some druggie trying to smuggle it in
from Columbia must have missed the drop zone!".
Usually guys just deny that they ever took the stuff in the
first place and try to convince everyone that the test must be wrong.
"Hey, no - I never took the stuff - you must have gotten the results
mixed up!".
However, no one usually buys that explanation, either.
About the only thing that can save Holmes is if all his other
tests came back negative and it looks like there might actually have
been a mixup or some contamination at the labs where the test is
done.
But I doubt if this one was done at the FBI crime labs.
So I think we have to say goodbye to Clayton Holmes. His loss
would not be a big one, but when added to all the injuries that the
team has been suffering, it will have a negative psychological effect
on the team that doesn't need any more bad news.
