Jul 19, 1997: -- Izzo Tears Achilles; Out for Season --
Dolphins reserve linebacker Larry Izzo became the third Dolphin
player to suffer a season ending injury yesterday when his achilles
tendon snapped will running drills at training camp.
Izzo was running simple drills between some pylons when his left
achilles ruptured, tossing him onto the ground. This is an injury similar
to the one that sidelined Dan Marino back in 1993.
Izzo wasn't hit and the injury was a freak accident.
Izzo is a backup linebacker who established himself last year
as a special-teams standout. He joined the Dolphins as an undrafted
rookie and made the team by playing outstanding special teams.
My Comments:
Well, they say that disasters happen in threes and this makes
three players knocked out for the year with serious injuries.
And while none of the players was a starter last season, both Kirby
Dar Dar and Larry Izzo were special very important to the Dolphin' special
teams. They will be difficult to replace.
I don't think that I've ever seen three players have three
season-ending injuries in a row like this, especially before the season
has even begun. It kind of makes you wonder what the football gods are
up to...
