Apr 19, 1997: -- Yatil Green is the Dolphins first pick --
With the 15th pick in the 1997 draft, the Dolphins have
selected wide receiver Yatil Green as their first pick.
After all the hype and the predictions leading up to the
draft, JJ has, once again, surprised all the experts and taken a
player for the second year in a row who has tremendous talent but was
not all that productive in college.
Yatil Green was variously graded as either the 1st or 2nd best
receiver in the draft. Coming out of the University of Miami as a
junior, Green caught 42 passes for 669 yards and 3 touchdowns during
his last year in college, despite being suspended for the first 2
games of 1996 and sitting out a lot of the time with injuries.
At the combine in Indianapolis, he ran a 4.4 in the 40, had a
vertical jump of more than 40 inches and set a combine record in the
broad jump with a jump of 10'10". He is 6'2 and 7/8 inches tall and
weighs in at 200 pounds. He can outjump smaller defensive backs and
still come down with the ball.
My Comments:
Clearly, I think that JJ is looking for a Michael Irvin type
playmaker. The knock on Green has been that he has never played a
full season without being injured and he has a history of problems
with his hamstring and groin muscles. However, he has great speed,
good hands and is a tremendous athlete.
