Mar 21, 1997: -- TE Reeves Signs --

** Dolphins Sign Reeves

The Dolphins announced today that they have signed free agent tight end Walter Reeves to a 2 year contract for undisclosed terms. Reeves will backup Troy Drayton and provide a blocking tight end in 2 tight end sets, which Jimmy Johnson expects to use more frequently next season.

Reeves (6'4", 270 lbs) was originally drafted in the 2nd round by the Phoenix Cardinals in 1989 draft. He spent 5 years in Phoenix, 2 in Cleveland and last year he played in San Diego. He is not a receiving tight end, but his size makes him a good blocker.

** Dolphins Extend Eddie Jones' Contract

The Dolphins also announced that they have extended the contract of President Eddie Jones by 2 years. Jones directs the Dolphins' business operations and is responsible for actually making the contract deals with players.

Jones has been with the Dolphins since 1988 and in 1991, he took over all contract negotiations with the players. He is well regarded around the league and is reportedly very good at dealing with the players and their agents.

My Comments:

Reeves is really just another offensive lineman, who happens to be called a tight end. He'll be used mostly as a blocker (after all, he only caught one pass last year). His signing fills a gap in the depth chart at tight end and hopefully gives the Dolphins a good blocker.

Eddie Jones is a definite asset to the team and extending his contract is almost as necessary as signing the right players. He is exceptionally good at dealing with agents and players and he is well liked.
