** Teague Signs
The Dolphins signed free agent George Teague yesterday to a 3
year deal, reportedly worth about $3 million. Teague had agreed to
terms with the Dolphins on Wednesday after talking with them for about
a month following his February 20th visit.
Teague stepped in for the injured Brock Marion last year for
the Cowboys and had his most memorable game against Minnesota in the
playoffs, where he stripped Amp Lee of the ball and prevented a
touchdown. He also returned an interception for a touchdown for the
Cowboys.
** Robert Bailey Cut
The Dolphins cut cornerback Robert Bailey yesterday in order
to free up money under the salary cap. Bailey was in the final year
of a 2 year deal that he signed last spring with the Dolphins. He was
scheduled to make about $340,000 this year.
Bailey played in the nickel defense last year and on special
teams. He had 9 total tackles and 1 sack during the 1996 season.
** Other Free Agent News
Defensive end Ernie Logan, who visited the Dolphins several
weeks ago, has signed with the New York Jets. Logan is a free agent
from the Jaguars who has been known more for his potential than for
his actual production on the field.
My Comments:
Teague's signing probably ends the free agent signing period
in Miami this spring - at least until after the draft. I say probably,
because you never know if JJ has another card up his sleeve.
Robert Bailey has been a journeyman defensive back for most of
his career and contributed very little to the Dolphins last year.
Considering the problems the Dolphins have had in the secondary, that
doesn't exactly speak well for his talents. I don't think he'll be
missed.
