Feb 15, 1997: -- Jordan and Miller take Pay Cuts --
Jordan & Miller Take Pay Cuts:
The Miami Herald is reporting this morning that WR Charles
Jordan, whom the Dolphins signed away from Green Bay last year, has
agreed to take a pay cut from $700,000 to $400,000 for the 1997
season. Jordan was one of the players that the Dolphins had been
negotiating with to take a pay cut in order to free up some more money
underneath the salary cap.
The pay cut that Jordan took assures that he will be back for
the 1997 season. If he hadn't been willing to take a pay cut, he
probably would have been cut.
The team originally had high hopes for Jordan, both as a
return man and as a wide receiver. However, due to injuries, personal
problems, and a questionable attitude, Jordan only managed to catch 7
passes last year and JJ determined that he wasn't worth the money that
he was scheduled to make.
Also taking a pay cut was Scott Miller, but it couldn't have
been much of a cut, because Miller was only scheduled to make $350,000
this coming year. Miller will now play for league minimum, which, for
a player of his experience, should be just under $200,000.
Spikes Gets Offer:
The Dolphins tendered restricted free agent Irving Spikes a
contract offer worth approximately $361,000. Because Spikes is a
restricted free agent, the Dolphins needed to offer him a contract in
order to keep him as a restricted free agent. If they hadn't made him
an offer, he would have been an unrestricted free agent as of Friday.
Dolphins to get 10 picks in the first 6 rounds:
The Miami Herald reported on Friday that Jimmy Johnson expects
the NFL to award the Dolphins 3 extra picks in the first 4 rounds as
compensation for losses suffered in free agency last year. JJ said he
expects to get 2 extra third round picks and an extra 4th round
pick. That would give the Dolphins 1 first round, 1 second round, 3
third round, 3 fourth round, 1 fifth round and 1 sixth round pick.
Of course, that's before JJ starts wheeling and dealing.
Non-Dolphin Free Agent News:
The Oakland Raiders cut defensive tackle Jerry Ball on
Thursday to help make salarly cap room to sign quarterback Jeff
George. However, they re-signed free agent cornerback Terry McDaniel.
My Comments:
Jordan is lucky to still be on the team. According to the
Herald, Terrell Buckley talked Jordan into taking the pay cut, paving
the way for Jordan to stay on the team and try to redeem himself
following his disappointing performance of 1996.
I hope that the Dolphins can keep Irving Spikes on the roster,
because he's an excellent kickoff returner and a good backup for
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
The reason that I bring up Jerry Ball is that if the Dolphins
don't get Emtman back, Ball might fit very well into the rotation in
Miami.
