DOLPHINS NEWS:
Don Shula was named for induction into the Pro Football Hall
of Fame today, heading the list of 4 inductees selected by the 36
member Board of Selectors for the Hall.
Coach Shula will be inducted into the Hall this summer in a
ceremony in Canton, Ohio.
The other 3 inductees are Raiders cornerback Mike Haynes,
Steeler's center Mike Webster and Giants' owner Wellington Mara.
Dolphins' center Dwight Stephenson made the final stage, but didn't
get the required 80% of the votes necessary for induction.
Don Shula's career as a head coach spanned 33 years. He spent
his first 7 years as a head coach with the Baltimore Colts, guiding
them to a 73-26-4 record and a SuperBowl appearance.
With the Dolphins, Don Shula was their head coach for 26
years, making them the winningest team in all professional sports
since he took over in 1970. He took them to 5 SuperBowls and coached
them to the only undefeated season in professional football history in
1972.
His final record as a head coach was 347-173-6 and his
leadership, spirit and integrity will long be remembered by fans
everywhere.
My Comments:
There was no question that Don Shula would be inducted into
the Hall of Fame this year. If ever there was a man who stood for the
things that pro football should be about (but rarely is), it is Don
Shula.
