DOLPHINS NEWS:
The Chicago Tribune is reporting this morning that a trade may
be in the works to send Dan Marino to the Bears. They base this
dubious piece of reporting on 3 items, none of which are firm enough
to be called facts.
First of all, the authors report to have "heard" that Dan and
his family are staying at the Deerpath Inn in Lake Forest, which is
near Chicago. Secondly, the authors also report that their "inside
source" with the Bears tells them that Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wanntedt
have been talking on the phone "almost every day".
Third, they state that "Marino, a sure-fire Hall of Famer,
isn't considered to be 'on the same page' with Johnson." They do not
state where this piece of information originates.
The writers of the piece, which appears to be more gossip
column than news article, devote 2 paragraphs to speculation about
Marino and then devote the rest of their 10 paragraphs to stories
about local radio and television personalities, including a short
paragraph about Courtney Love.
On the other hand, in an interview with ESPN's Chris Meyers
last night, Jimmy Johnson told Chris quite emphatically that Marino
would never be traded and that he (Marino) would retire as a Dolphin.
The article appeared in the news section of the Chicago Tribune
on Tuesday morning, January 8th and makes no mention of who or what
the Bears would trade to get Marino.
My Comments:
I'm sorry to have to report these silly rumors, but a number
of people have asked if I had heard anything about the rumor of a
trade to the Bears. The only source of this rumor appears to be this
Tribune article and the only piece of hard evidence that they claim to
have is that they have "heard" that Marino is visiting the Chicago
area.
After listening to JJ last night on ESPN, I have just one
thing to say about this rumor - it is pure Bull-loney. During the
course of his interview, JJ was only really positive about about one
thing - that Dan Marino is not going to be traded and that he will
stay a Dolphin as long as he wants to play football.
As for this article, well, it appears deep in the news section
of the Chicago Tribune. However, there is no mention of this supposed
trade in their Sports Section. Also, I have never heard of the
writers of this article, and I rather suspect that they are not sports
reporters of any kind.
So the bottom line is this - don't believe this rumor. I have
a better chance of starting for the Bears next fall than Dan Marino
does.
