DOLPHINS NEWS:
The Dolphins announced yesterday that they would fill their
vacant roster spot by signing formers Jets offensive lineman John Bock
to the team. Bock was released by the Jets earlier this season after
having spent 2 years on their team.
Bock, at 6'3" and 295, was originally signed by the Buffalo
Bills in the summer of 1994 as a rookie free agent out of Indiana
State. The Bills cut him that same summer and as far as I've been
able to determine, the he's been with the Jets ever since.
Bock plays guard and center and also can handle the
long-snapping duties.
In other, more important news, both Dan Marino and Fred
Barnett practiced yesterday with the team. According to the Miami
Herald, after the practice yesterday, JJ said that he was very pleased
with both players' practices and he will decided on Sunday whether or
not they will play.
Marino and Barnett each took a quarter of the snaps in
individual drills and Barnett also took a quarter of the snaps in team
drills.
Also on the practice field yesterday, Charles Jordan spent
some time returning punts in practice, a job that has been held by OJ
McDuffie. McDuffie, however, had a fumble on Sunday against the Bills
and has not been particularly impressive returning punts this year.
My Comments:
Bock played under Larry Beightol with the Jets and the
Dolphins are signing him to provide a little depth on the offensive
line.
I'm a little concerned what this means for the return of Jeff
Cross, however. It may be that this is an indication that the
Dolphins are not confident that Cross will be able to return this
season. On the other hand, it may have nothing to do with Cross.
I'm glad that Jordan is getting a chance to return punts.
Frankly, OJ is too important to risk on special teams and has not been
that impressive returning punts. In fact, since his rookie year, when
he returned two punts for TDs, OJ has not really been doing all that
well as a punt returner.
