Sep 12, 1996: -- Green to work out in Miami --
The Miami Herald is reporting this morning that former
Dolphins tight end Eric Green will work out for the team next week in
an attempt to convince JJ that he should re-sign the man he cut in the
preseason.
He will also be working out with Baltimore and Kansas City,
according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus. Rosenhaus went on to say that
Green could be ready to play by week 5. "He'll surprise a lot of
people" said Rosenhaus.
To be realistic about it, Green would have to accept a minimum
base salary with incentives to be considered by the Dolphins. For
veterans like Green, that minimum is $275,000.
However, if Green was re-signed by the Dolphins, he would drop
his $1.5 million injury grievance that he filed against the team when
they cut him earlier in the summer.
That other former Dolphins tight end Johnny Mitchell has also
been seeking to rejoin the team, but is insisting on a salary that is
higher than the league minimum, which has kept him away from the team.
The Dolphins are not willing to part with any more money for him.
In other news, the Dolphins did suffer two minor injuries on
Sunday. WR Charles Jordan hyperextended his khee on one catch and is
now listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Jets. And DE
Aaron Jones sprained his thumb, but is expected to be fine for
Sunday's game.
And in case you haven't heard yet, the Pro Player folks have
supposedly bowed to pressure from the fans and renamed Pro Player Park
once again. It is now to be called "Pro Player Stadium".
Lastly, former Dolphin's center/tackle/guard Jeff Dellenbach,
who took $1.4 million per year to join the New England Patriots last
season has been cut by the Patriots after starting just 5 games for
them and never achieving the success that Coach Bill Parcells was
hoping for.
My Comments:
I am undecided about bringing back Eric Green. On the one
hand, he's been a terrible underachiever and a waste of money ever
since he set foot in Miami. He's been lazy and not been dedicated to
the game or the team.
On the other hand, JJ will certainly not tolerate his
foolishness again and won't hesitate to bench or cut him if he's not
performing. And he does have the skills to be the best tight end in
the league, if he wants it badly enough.
I guess I'll just trust JJ on this one. It's not like the
Dolphins have a whole lot to lose. In fact, if they were to sign Green
to the minimum salary, they'd free up money under the salary cap,
since the grievance that he's filed freezes money that the team could
use for other things.
Charles Jordan just can't seem to stay healthy. JJ's been
playing musical receivers at the spot opposite OJ on the starting
roster, so look for Randal Hill to get his chance this Sunday against
the Jets.
As far as the place in South Florida where the Dolphins play
their games, I will continue to call it Joe Robbie Stadium.m
