Dolphins News: First Round Pick Gardener Signs 5 year Deal
*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Jun 06, 1996: -- First Round Pick Gardener Signs 5 year Deal --
ESPN is announcing that the Dolphins have signed first round
draft pick Daryl Gardener to a 5 year deal for undisclosed terms.
Gardener's deal has been rumored to be about $5.5 million over 5 years
with a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $1.8 million. Gardener is
the first 1st round draft pick to sign a contract with his chosen
team.
In order to make room for Gardener and to free up money under
the salary cap, the Dolphins have cut 5 year veteran defensive tackle
Chuck Klingbeil, who was expected to make about $580,000 this
year. Klingbeil may be brought back later at a reduced salary,
however, depending on whether or not he can get interest from another
team.
Also in the news, the Dolphins have cut wide receiver Henry
Neal. Neal, who didn't play football in college, was mainly known for
his achievements running track.
My Comments:
Getting the rookies signed early is always a good thing. It's
even better that Gardener was signed first, because all the other
rookies will now have a realisitic expectation of where they stand and
will be less likely to hold out with unrealistic expectations.
I always liked Chuck Klingbeil, but JJ didn't and he's the
coach. Somehow I don't think that Klingbeil will be back.
