Dolphins News: Defensive Ends signed

*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***

Apr 05, 1996: -- Defensive Ends signed --

The Dolphins announced yesterday that they have signed defensive ends Daniel Stubbs and Aaron Jones to one year contracts for undisclosed terms. Both players were unrestricted free agents who have 8 years experience in the league.

The Dolphins also signed free agent wide receiver Henry Neal, who ran track at Texas Southern University but never played college football.

Stubbs spent last year with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played in all 16 games and started 6. For his efforts, he finished the season with 29 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. Before the Eagles, Stubbs has spent time with the Cowboys and Bengals since he was drafted by the 49ers in 1988. Stubbs played his college football for Jimmy Johnson at the University of Miami.

Jones was drafted in the first round of the 1988 draft by Pittsburgh. He played 5 years for the Steelers before signing with the Patriots. Last year, Jones played in 9 games where he had 7 tackles and 1 sack.

My Comments:

Stubbs is an old Jimmy Johnson protege' who has had a steady if unspectacular career. Stubbs had almost as many sacks last year as Marco Coleman and should be able to contribute to the Dolphins with his experience and steady play.

Jones is a guy with terrific physical tools, but he has never lived up to his potential. About the only thing that may save him in Miami is that the Dolphins play the 4-3 defense, while both the Steelers and the Patriots play the 3-4. Jones is only 267 lbs and will be better off in the 4 man line.

Neal was obviously signed for his speed. It remains to be seen how well he can catch.
