*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***

Mar 14, 1996: -- Packers Fail to match Offer; Jordan becomes a Phin. --

The Green Bay Packers decided not to match the Miami Dolphins' offer to wide receiver/punt returner Charles Jordan yesterday, which means that Jordan will be a Miami Dolphin this coming season. The Dolphins have offered Jordan a 3 year contract for undisclosed terms.

Jordan was a restricted free agent because he had less than 4 years in the league, but the Packers' compensation for not matching the Dolphins was only listed as the right of first refusal. This means that the Dolphins will not have to give up anything because they've signed Jordan.

With the acquisition of Jordan, the Dolphins have a serious punt/kick return threat who averaged 10.1 yards per punt return last year. This is in contrast to OJ McDuffie, who averaged just 6.8 yards per return last year. The Packers apparently felt that Antonio Freeman could do a better job at returning kicks than Jordan.

Jordan's stats as a wide receiver were less impressive, since he caught just seven passes last season. However, he did score 2 touchdowns in those seven catches.

My Comments: The signing of Jordan gives the Dolphins a good punt/kick return threat that also frees up OJ McDuffie from having to perform that duty. Not to mention giving the Dolphins another fast wide receiver.
