Dolphins News: Update on Coleman and Other News...

*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***

Mar 01, 1996: -- Update on Coleman and Other News... --

Contrary to my previous report, it appears that Marco Coleman did not actually sign the offer sheet that the Chargers put on the table until yesterday. This offer is supposed to be $9.5 million for 3 years with a $4 million signing bonus.

Chris Mortenson of ESPN had originally reported that Coleman had signed the offer sheet on Tuesday, but this has turned out to be incorrect.

In order to sign Coleman, the Chargers waived running back Natrone Means, who had lead them to the SuperBowl two years ago.

In other Dolphins news, the Florida Times Union in Jacksonville, FL reported yesterday that the Jaguars are talking to the Dolphins about a trade for Troy Vincent.

According to the Times Union, after the Jaguars lost their bid to sign Cardinals' cornerback Aeneas Williams, they turned their attention to Miami and proposed the trade, which would involve one or more draft picks.

For the trade to be completed, the Dolphins would have to sign Vincent. This would involve matching the $16.5 million offer sheet that Vincent signed last Friday with the Eagles. The Dolphins must match the offer today in order to sign Vincent.

The Pro-Football Insider report is saying that Wide Receivers Ernest Givins and Charles Jordan worked out for the Dolphins last week. Also, Jaguars cornerback Dave Thomas (a restricted free agent) has worked out for the Dolphins on Wednesday

My Comments:

On the Coleman deal, I can only reiterate what I said in my last update - nothing he has done in his time with the Dolphins makes him worth the money. Now, perhaps he would flourish with his old coach Bobby Ross in San Diego, but he has yet to live up to the promise of his first round selection.

Plus, in order to get Coleman, the Chargers waived running back Natrone Means - to which I have to ask the question "what on earth are they thinking out there?"

As far as the news of a possible trade for Vincent, that is pretty wild. However, it sounds exactly like the kind of thing that JJ might go for. Given the current situation, it seems like a longshot to me, but perhaps it will happen. In any case, it is interesting.....

I am adding a new section to my news reports - a section for links to the URLs of news articles on other servers that are relevant to this news. Some of these links are likely to be very volatile and short-lived, however, so if you don't get to them within 2 or 3 days of when this article is posted, don't be surprised if they aren't there.
